HOUGHTON -- The Copper Country Peace Alliance will hold its next Walk for Peace Saturday,
Dec. 28, starting at noon from the
Motherlode in Houghton. The theme for this walk is "Our New Year's Resolution: Working Locally to Achieve Peace Globally." Everyone who supports a diplomatic, non-violent solution of the conflict with Iraq is invited to participate. For more information, call 483-3183.

HOUGHTON
-- "Freedom from want; freedom from fear and terror; peace for all people of all faiths and nations" is the theme of the Dec. 21 Walk for Peace, sponsored by the Copper Country Peace Alliance (CCPA). The walk begins at noon from the Motherlode in Houghton. Everyone who supports a diplomatic, non-violent resolution of the conflict with Iraq is invited to participate. CCPA members collected about 40 health kits for Iraq on Dec. 14 and also paused during their walk to visit the Community Meal at the Salvation Army in Hancock.

Copper Country Audubon to hold Christmas Bird Count Dec. 21

HOUGHTON
-- Copper Country Audubon will hold its annual Christmas Bird count all day
Saturday, Dec. 21. Groups of participants will cover sections in a 15-mile diameter circle centered in

for information. Report the day's sightings at a 6 p.m. potluck at the

Ahmeek's Streetcar Station Gallery to hold Open House Dec. 14

The Streetcar Station Gallery in Ahmeek will hold an Open House from noon to 8
p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. The public is invited to browse artwork and
photography from M.J.Shupe, J.Renee, j.d.slack, Mary Anne Beckwith, Bill Wiard,
Edith Wiard, Arnold Oja, Ronald Gratz and Peg McNinch of Silver Rae Studios,
while sampling delicious new Homemade Pizza and other goodies. The Streetcar
Station (known also for its ice cream in summer) is on U.S. 41, just on the
left as you enter Ahmeek in Keweenaw County.

"Remembering Phillip Berrigan, devoted activist for peace and justice" will be the theme of the Dec. 14 Walk for Peace, starting at noon Saturday from the Motherlode
in Houghton. The walk is sponsored by the Copper Country Peace Alliance (CCPA). Everyone who supports a diplomatic, non-violent resolution of the conflict with Iraq is invited to participate.
After the walk CCPA members will collect family health kits for Iraq at the

Center to hold Holiday Open House Dec. 12

HANCOCK --
The Community Arts Center in Hancock will hold a Holiday Open House from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. Live music, shopping, free gift wrapping, a Parade
of Confections and a Silent Gift Auction will be part of the festivities. The
event will also be a reception for the Kerredge Gallery's "Small"
exhibit of art work from private collections. more

CALUMET -- The Copper Country Community Arts Council's 26th
Annual Poor Artists' Sale will be held from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday,
Dec. 7, in the Calumet Public School Gymnasium. From Joe Kirkish's photos
to Christine Young's dolls, creations by
local artists provide a unique holiday shopping experience. The Calumet
Gym is located in the High School building across the hall from the
Calumet Public Library.

students hold "sit-in" fundraiser for sanitation projects in West Africa

On a chilly, snowy Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, Michigan Tech engineering
students began a 50-hour "sit-in" fundraiser for a Peace Corps project
to build latrines in
two villages in Cameroon, West Africa, in order to prevent hygiene-related diseases.
