MTU hosts Spirit of the Harvest Powwow and Speakers' Forum Nov. 1-2

be featured at the seventh annual Spirit of the Harvest Powwow from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Michigan Technological University's Gates Tennis Center. Admission is free, and the public is invited. A Speakers' Forum beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, in the Memorial Union on campus will include a presentation on building a birch bark canoe and entertainment by Native singer-songwriter Bill Miller. Timber Wolf Alliance Speaker to highlight Nov. 2 Conservation District Meeting

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District will hold its 51st Annual Meeting and board elections from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Finnish American Heritage Center on the campus of Finlandia University. Guest speaker Nancy Warren, a Timber Wolf Alliance volunteer from the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute of Northland College in Ashland, Wis., will provide information about wolves of Michigan and Wisconsin. MTU Student Theatre Association to present Fall Shows

MTU students rehearse for Nov. 1 and 2 Fall Show of one-act plays. HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech's Student Theatre Association (STA) will present its Fall Shows at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, in the McArdle Theatre of the Walker Arts and Humanities Center on the MTU campus. Two student-written and student-directed, one-act plays will be presented: Time Enough for Lunch and The Divine Engineer. While donations are accepted, the performance is free and open to the public. more

Local residents to join D.C. march against war on Iraq Oct. 26

Citizens Opposed to War with Iraq march in Hancock on Oct. 12. Some of the group will join a National March Oct. 26 in Washington, D.C. HOUGHTON -- On Oct. 26, 2002, 17 residents from Houghton and Marquette will join a national march on Washington, D.C., to demonstrate opposition to war on Iraq. In Washington, D.C., the group will join a rally at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, 21st St. and Constitution Ave., N.W. A joint action will be held in San Francisco. Locally, the Citizens Opposed to War with Iraq will have a Walk for Peace from Houghton to Hancock and back on Saturday, Oct. 26. A send-off rally for the group will be held from 11 a.m. to Noon on Friday, Oct. 25, at Harlow Park on Washington Street in Marquette. In Washington, D.C., the group will join a rally at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, 21st St. and Constitution Ave., N.W. A joint action will be held in San Francisco. Volunteers needed for Swedetown trail brushing Oct. 19

Swedetown trail brushers (Photo courtesy Jon Neufeld) CALUMET -- Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Swedetown Chalet in Calumet for brushing to prepare the trails for the cross-country ski season. Brushers will use hand tools to snip brush from the edges of the trail that cannot be mowed. They should wear boots and gloves and bring a long handled lopper if they have one or use one from the ski club. more

Volunteer groups to host Community Meal Oct. 19 in Hancock

HANCOCK -- Local church groups and community organizations will host a Community Meal, free and open to the public, from Noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Salvation Army, 408 Ravine St., Hancock. Chef Don Peryam will prepare the light lunch for fun and fellowship. For more information call Quentin Boyle at 482-3420.

Hancock students to participate in National Water Monitoring Day Oct. 18

2002 Year of Clean Water logo HANCOCK -- On Friday, Oct. 18, Hancock High School science students will help mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Clean Water Act. By monitoring the water at two sites on Swedetown Creek, they will be among many volunteers, students and others joining with environmental professionals for National Water Monitoring Day. This event marks the first time that water monitoring will be conducted nationwide on one day. more

Walkin' Jim Stoltz LAKE LINDEN -- Walkin' Jim Stoltz, who has walked over 26,000 miles on backcountry treks through America’s last wild places, will present his multi-media show, "Forever Wild" -- combining his photography, poetry, stories and live music -- at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Little Gem Theatre in Lake Linden. Walkin' Jim has also been performing in local schools this week. more

A social hour at 6 p.m. precedes the meeting. Guest speaker Jenni LeBlanc of The Conservation Fund will discuss the new Michigan Forest Legacy Program and the Great Lakes Revolving Loan Fund, of which she is the director. more
