Calumet Theatre to host Historic Fashion Show and dance Sept. 29

Becky Weeks CALUMET -- The Finlandia University Fiber Design Senior Fashion Show by Becky Weeks, artist and seamstress, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in the Calumet Theatre. Weeks will present her own view of the history of fashion from its pre-historic roots to present-day Copper Country. A celebration dance, with live Finnish music, will follow in the Theatre Ballroom. more

Marquette Citizens' group to hold Forum on Iraq Sept. 24

MARQUETTE -- A Forum on Iraq will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette (downstairs). The event is sponsored by SpeakUP, Citizens Opposed to War with Iraq, and Northern Michigan University United Students. Questions and discussion will follow the panel presentations. Cider and doughnuts will be served.

Parade of Nations to feature carnival theme Sept. 21

Calypso Tumblers HOUGHTON-- With the theme, "Carnivals of Nations," hundreds of representatives from more than 70 countries will march in the 2002 Parade of Nations on Saturday, Sept. 21. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Hancock Middle School, crosses the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and ends at Houghton's Dee Stadium for a Multicultural Festival. In addition to festive floats and bands, this year's parade features a mask contest and special guest performers, the Calypso Tumblers from New York. Local groups to participate in Coastal Cleanup Sept. 21

Lake Superior shoreline at mouth of Gratiot River CALUMET -- A beach cleanup of Lake Superior shoreline from North Sedar Bay to the Mouth of the Gratiot River and Seven Mile Point is the goal of local groups of volunteers participating in the International Coastal Cleanup™ on Saturday, Sept. 21. The North Woods Conservancy, the Copper Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Keweenaw County and the Michigan Nature Association will work together on the cleanup in conjunction with the Lake Michigan Federation and the Ocean Conservancy. more

Zoning/Planning Commission to hold work session with WUPPDR Sept. 18

HOUGHTON -- The Keweenaw County Zoning/Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in the Courthouse in Eagle River. Zoning Administrator Jane Pelto said the hearing is really a work session with WUPPDR (Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region) to review the Keweenaw County "Blueprint For Tomorrow" Land Use Plan. more

Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District seeking nominations for Board elections

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District is now accepting nominations to its Board of Directors. Two four-year term seats on the board will be filled during the annual meeting and election on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Hancock's Finnish American Heritage Center. Any Houghton or Keweenaw County resident interested in running for a seat on the board may phone or visit the Conservation District Office to request a nominating petition. Completed petitions are due by Tues., Sept. 3, in the District office, 600 East Lakeshore Drive, Houghton, MI 49931. Phone: 906-482-0214. Fax: 906-482-6074.
