Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District seeking nominations for Board elections

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District is now accepting nominations to its Board of Directors. Two four-year term seats on the board will be filled during the annual meeting and election on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Hancock's Finnish American Heritage Center. Any Houghton or Keweenaw County resident interested in running for a seat on the board may phone or visit the Conservation District Office to request a nominating petition. Completed petitions are due by Tues., Sept. 3, in the District office, 600 East Lakeshore Drive, Houghton, MI 49931. Phone: 906-482-0214. Fax: 906-482-6074. Tamburitzans to perform at Calumet Theatre Aug. 18

Tamburitzans poster courtesy Calumet TheatreCALUMET - The internationally famous Duquesne University Tamburitzans will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 18, at the Calumet Theatre. Established in 1937, the "Tammies" are well known to Copper Country audiences for their colorful costumes and ingenious choreography of international folk dances from Croatia to Bulgaria. Dinner to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity

HOUGHTON -- Trinity Episcopal Church on E. Montezuma Street in Houghton will host a fundraising dinner for Copper Country Habitat for Humanity (CCHFH) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. The menu includes roast parmesan chicken and baked cheese ravioli. Adults: $8; children under 12: $5. Take out available. Tickets are available in advance from CCHFH Board members or from Margaret Sottile at the church. Call 482-9363.

Public encouraged to discuss Keweenaw County's future Aug. 7

Lori Hauswirth of WUPPDR presents draft land use plan document to Keweenaw County Zoning Planning Commission in May 2002. MOHAWK -- Keweenaw County residents and interested persons are encouraged to attend a public informational meeting regarding the Keweenaw Blueprint for Tomorrow Land Use Plan currently under development. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Mohawk School. The Grant Township Land Use Planning Committee will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, in the Copper Harbor Community Building. Planners say why they hope for public input at both meetings. more

MTU's Daniell Heights to host International Food Fest Aug. 3

HOUGHTON -- Daniell Heights Community of Michigan Tech University Apartments will celebrate its fourth annual International Food Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. Like MTU's annual Parade of Nations, the food festival is a time for people to learn about global cultures and try a variety of authentic traditional cuisine from about a dozen countries. International handicrafts will also be on sale at reasonable prices. Daniell Heights is located just off MacInness Drive on campus. From Houghton, turn right off U.S. 41 at the traffic light and turn left at the first street. Follow the exotic aromas!
