Jeyds' Justin Planasch to perform ethnic acoustic pop at Little Gem Theater

LAKE LINDEN -- Acoustic musician Justin Planasch, formerly of The Jeyds, has
returned to the Copper Country. He will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23,
at the Little Gem Theatre in Lake Linden. Guest reporter Suzanne Miron
interviewed Justin at his March 22 performance at the Michigan House in Calumet.
She says Justin describes his music as an ethnic style intertwined with pop. more
MTU Forestry Symposium to discuss future of Keweenaw land use March 22

HOUGHTON
-- This year's annual forestry symposium, "The Future of Land Use in the
Keweenaw Peninsula," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March
22, in Room G002 of the Noblet forestry building at Michigan Technological
University. Two Keweenaw Now guest authors, State Rep. Rich Brown
(D-Bessemer) and Katie Alvord are among the speakers at the symposium, which is
open to the public. more
Visiting geologist to speak on "Killer African Lake" March 18 at MTU

HOUGHTON -- In 1986, Lake Nyos, in Cameroon, West Africa, released a
cloud of carbon dioxide that killed 1,700 people and devastated domestic
herds and wildlife for miles. Michele Tuttle, a scientist with the United
States Geological Survey, will discuss the mysterious tragedy at 4
p.m. on Monday, March 18, in Dillman 214 on the Michigan Tech campus. Her
presentation is free and open to the public. The lecture (re-scheduled
because of March 15 weather) is part of the Phillips Petroleum/Association
of Women Geologists program, which promotes awareness of career
opportunities for women in the geological sciences. Read

Karelian Folk Music Ensemble to perform in Hancock March 15

HANCOCK -- The Karelian Folk Music Ensemble (KFME), a three-member group of
highly trained musicians from Petrozavodsk, Karelia, Russia, will perform at
7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center in
Hancock. Before and after the concert, the public is invited to a Finnish coffee
house. more
Eagle Harbor Township Board to meet March 11

EAGLE HARBOR -- The Eagle Harbor Township Board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday,
March 11, in the Township Hall, following a budget meeting that begins at 6:30
p.m. The board's agenda includes the Supervisor's remarks and correspondence on
various items, including sewage treatment, home occupation and the Attorney
General's opinion on county ordinances. New business includes the budget for

Young scientists to exhibit projects at Western UP Science Fair

HOUGHTON
-- Four hundred area students in grades four through nine will participate in
the Fourth Annual Western Upper Peninsula Science Fair on Thursday, March 14,
2002, in the Michigan Tech University Memorial Union Ballroom. Students from
nine local elementary schools, six middle schools and one high school will
participate. more
Youth artists exhibit work in Hancock, Calumet

HANCOCK -- Two new exhibits of artwork by local youth will honor young artists
during Youth Arts Month. Both the Community Arts Center in Hancock and the
Omphale Gallery in Calumet are displaying work by Copper Country youth during
the month of March. more

Bear Scat" to kick off Great Bear Chase ski races March 8-10

CALUMET -- The "Great Bear Scat," a freestyle nordic skiing sprint
race at the Swedetown sledding hill, will kick off the Great Bear Chase ski
festival at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8. This newest addition to the cross-country
ski weekend is open to ages 8 to 60 plus. The 2002 Junior Bear Chase for ages 0
to 16 will be held on Saturday, March 9; and the adult Great Bear Chase is on
Sunday, March 10. Both of these include classic and freestyle races. more
