Keweenaw land-use planners to present "2001: An Open-Space Odyssey" Jan. 24.

HOUGHTON -- A forum on 2001 as a landmark year for public land
acquisitions and land-use planning activities in the Keweenaw Peninsula
will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Alumni
Lounge of the Memorial Union Building at Michigan Technological
University. The program, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters
of the Copper Country (LWVCC) and Michigan Tech's GEM Center for Science
and Environmental Outreach, will give an overview of work done in the past
year by grassroots organizations, local governments and the public. more

Peace Alliance to observe Martin Luther King, Jr., Day with video showing

HOUGHTON -- In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, the Copper Country
Peace Alliance will again present the video, "Peace and Justice: Terrorism,
Trade, and U.S. Foreign Policy," by Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer from 5 p.m. -
6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, at Portage Lake United Church in Houghton. Read

Heikinpäivä ski races to be held at Swedetown Trails in Calumet

HANCOCK -- The Heikinpäivä Hiihto Cross Country Ski Races scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, have been moved to the Swedetown Ski Trails in Calumet. In order to allow everyone time to reach the new venue, the races will
start later than previously advertised. See

Township Board to meet Jan. 14

EAGLE HARBOR -- The Eagle Harbor Township Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, in the Eagle Harbor Township
Hall. The supervisor will report on the recent Keweenaw County Board Meeting, progress on grant applications and recent correspondence.

Heikinpäivä Museum to feature "gizmos"

HANCOCK -- A one-day "Museum of Homecrafted Tools,
Gadgets and Gizmos" will be held in conjunction with the
Hancock "Heikinpäivä Celebration," from noon to 4 p.m
on Saturday, Jan. 19. Items meeting the criteria for the Museum should
be brought to the basement Archives Office at the Finnish American
Heritage Center during the week of January 14 -18. more

HANCOCK -- The City of Hancock is nearly ready for the fourth annual
Heikinpäivä,
or St. Henry's Day, marking the midpoint of winter. Besides the lumitalo (snow
house) now under construction, the celebration will include a buffet dinner and
dance on Friday, Jan. 18, at Finlandia University, and, on Saturday, the Heikinpäivä
Hiihto ski race, a tori (market), a cooking workshop, a street theater
presentation, a birchbark basket-making class, an outdoor museum displaying
tools of early Finnish immigrants and more. more
Public Notice posted for new Mt. Bohemia groundwater discharge permit

MARQUETTE -- Black Bear, Inc. has filed a new groundwater discharge permit application proposing 36 lbs. annual phosphorus loading limit for the septic
system at Mt. Bohemia. The 30-day public comment period for this permit, which includes an antidegradation statement, ends Feb. 8, 2002.

EAGLE RIVER -- The Keweenaw County Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) will meet at 7 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2002, in the
Courthouse in Eagle River. The ZBA will consider three main issues: 1) what constitutes a
Home Occupation in a single family dwelling in a Resort Residential (RR) District; 2) whether sewage
systems that service a commercial enterprise should be allowed in an RR District; 3) the
ZBA Chairman's role in calling meetings. Read the Public Notice for this meeting.
