International residents to speak at Finlandia Forum

HANCOCK -- Finlandia University will host an open public forum on "Views of America from other
places" at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Finnish- American Heritage Center in Hancock. Local residents from the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan and other places around the world will give short presentations and invite the public to participate in conversation. A visiting Guatemalan family, sponsored by the Copper Country Guatemalan Accompaniment Project, will also participate in the forum.

Copper Country Guatemalan Accompaniment Project hosts visitors from Guatemala

KEWEENAW PENINSULA -- In an effort to promote international awareness and understanding, the Copper Country Guatemalan Accompaniment Project is hosting visitors from Guatemala from October 18- November 6th, 2001. A family from the town of Fronterizo diez de Mayo will represent their community to the Copper
Country. The family will be accompanied by a translator to give slide presentations to various civic groups and will visit homes and schools in the area.

Peace Corps recruiter to visit

HOUGHTON -- Colleen Marchwick, Peace Corps recruiter, will visit the Michigan Tech campus on Monday, Oct. 15, and Tuesday, Oct. 16, and will talk to Northern Michigan University students in Marquette on Wednesday, Oct. 17, and Thursday, Oct. 18. Marchwick served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco from 1993-95.

Rich Brown, D-Bessemer, will be the guest speaker at the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District's 50th Annual Meeting Saturday, October 13, 2001, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center on the campus of Finlandia University, Quincy Street in Hancock, MI. The event also includes a social hour with entertainment, a buffet dinner
and the election for the District's two available board of directors seats.

Crop Walk to raise funds for world, local hunger

HANCOCK – To raise funds combating hunger locally and in the world, local residents will join in a five-mile circular walk between Hancock and Houghton in the annual Crop Walk this Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at 2 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.
