Minor Houses/Minor Houses. Keweenaw Heritage Center (formerly St. Anne's Church), Calumet. Summer 2003 exhibit highlighting architecture of company houses -- housing built by the mining companies for their workers. Exhibit hours: 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., every day until Labor Day.

"Forest Spirits" is the new exhibit in the Community Arts Center’s Kerredge Gallery for September. The exhibition will include large-scale oil paintings, drawings and hand made dolls by Hancock artist, Joyce Koskenmaki. The public is invited to meet the artist at an opening reception and gallery talk at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5. The work will be on display through Sept. 27.

Community Arts Center, Hancock, Classes: Art classes are open for enrollment at the Community Arts Center in Hancock. Classes are scheduled throughout the fall, with the first classes starting in mid-September. Adult classes include basket making, writing, clay, drawing, watercolors, and snowshoe making. New this fall is the “Appetizer” series: affordable one-time classes designed to introduce students to new media. The Appetizer series will include paper arts, bookbinding, birch bark ornaments, drawing, painting, clay, beading, felting, tatting and more. Class size is limited; stop by the Community Arts Center or call 482-2333 to reserve your spot. Gift certificates are available for Arts Center classes.

Keweenaw Krayons at the Ramblin' Rose Gallery in Mohawk offers Art Classes and a variety of activities. The public is invited to participate in Keweenaw Krayons' pARTners Project continuing through the Labor Day weekend. This includes a beaver sculpture, complete with habitat, which is being built in the Gabriel Chopp Park in Ahmeek, and a bear mural currently being painted on the "Old Barbershop/New Community Building," located next to the Allouez Township Park in Mohawk. Also being built are two handicapped-accessible raised beds. One will be placed in front of the Mohawk Community Building and the other will be located in the Gabriel Chopp Park in Ahmeek. Designed so a wheel chair can roll under them, stools will also be available for gardeners.

According to Keweenaw Krayons Director, Carol Rose, "There are many elderly in the area who can no longer get down to plant and weed, but would still enjoy a 'garden experience.' These beds will provide that opportunity."Visit the Keweenaw Krayons Web site for details.

Applications are available for the Copper Country Community Arts Council’s 27th Annual Poor Artists Sale, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Calumet Public School Gymnasium. Artists working in any medium, who make their own original work, are eligible to apply. The booth fee is $50. Application deadline is Oct. 1, 2003. The show will be juried by a panel of professional artists. Originality and quality of the work will be of primary consideration. Applications may be picked up at the Community Arts Center located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock.
