Heritage Celebration Schedule of Events: June 28, 29, 30, 2002

Downtown Calumet and Agassiz Park

Friday, June 28

Downtown Historic window displays and Student Art contest throughout downtown merchant windows

7 p.m. White Water performance at the Calumet Theatre
Guided walking tour with Ed Jenich, departing from the Calumet Theatre right after the White Water performance
Saturday, June 29
7 a.m. - 1 p.m. Pancake breakfast and open house at the Elks Club at 6th and Temple
10 a.m. - noon Young Historian role players dressed in period clothing
10 a.m. - 5 p.m. AGASSIZ PARK

Two-day Ojibwe Indian Encampment with interpreters and displays sponsored by the Calumet High School National Honor Society.

Family games for all ages:

  • 100 person (all ages) tug of war
  • Watermelon seed spitting contest
  • Horseshoes, cribbage, checkers, chess, croquet and more
  • Cricket Games hosted by Tom Melville, as played 100 years ago

Heritage foods
Music by The Jan Arnold Show with many surprise performers
Guided walking tours
Mule-drawn carriage rides
Historic demonstrations: weavers, spinners, quilters, basket makers
Heritage type Arts and Crafts
Calumet Rotary Pie Social

DOWNTOWN CALUMET

Historic displays, antique cars and exhibits on 5th Street
Sidewalk sales
Heritage food specials at local restaurants
Red Cross Pig Roast and First Aid Booth at 5th and Elm

Many museums and attractions will be open during the day: Omphale Gallery, Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne's Church, U.P. Firefighters Memorial Museum, Albion Station, Norwegian Church, Coppertown USA Mining Museum, Calumet Theatre

 Noon - 4 p.m. Free "Ice Cream and Soda Social" at the Oak Street Inn, 808 Oak Street
7 p.m. - 1 a.m. Community Dance at the Calumet Armory, sponsored by the Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. $3 admission, music by Organized Chaos from 7:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m., food and refreshments available.
7:30 p.m. Stage Hits: Opera to Broadway at the Calumet Theatre, part of the Pine Mountain Music Festival
Sunday, June 30
1 p.m. - 4 p.m.  Tour of Churches
Mule-drawn carriage rides
Ojibwe Indian Encampment in Agassiz Park
1:30 p.m. Antique Parade, originating at Coppertown USA Mining Museum
