Fri. 7/2. Keweenaw Excursions
offers its Fireworks Cruise. View the spectacular Lake Linden fireworks from the
deck of the Keweenaw Star. This 4- hour cruise, which leaves from Dee Stadium on
Lakeshore Drive in Houghton, includes a full bar and gourmet hors d'oeuvres. For

in the Grant Township Park on US-41, 1 p.m. The fireworks display begins at dusk
on the waterfront.
Sun. 7/4. 11 a.m. The Village of Ahmeek 4th of July celebration. Gabe
Chopp Park. The children's bicycle parade, 11 a.m. Activities and concessions at
the park throughout the day. Activities include children's games, a penny toss,
watermelon eating contest, raffle drawing, bingo, food and refreshments and live
music.
Sun. 7/4. 11 a.m - 4 p.m. Join Main Street Calumet and Pasty
Central for Pasty Fest 2004. Agassiz Park on 4th Street in Calumet. See the
awarding of the Copper Pasty Award for the best pasty in the Keweenaw then enjoy
the Pasty Olympics with the Rutabaga Shot Put, the Potato Sack Race, the Egg
Wash Toss and the Cryin' Onion Relay. Live music and refreshments will round out
the event, featuring free pasties to the first 400 attendees. Pasty makers from
across the UP are invited to take part in the competition. A distinguished panel
of judges will taste-test entries in the search for the region's most delicious

Sun. 7/4. 1 p.m. Calumet children's 4th of July parade. Line up will
be at 4th Street and Red Jacket Road. Parade will proceed down 4th Street to
Louie's Super where there will be treats and money scrambles for the kids and
prizes for best-decorated bikes.

Scramble Trail Run and Fitness Walk.

Sun. 7/4. 7 p.m. The second annual Old-Time Hymn and Patriotic
Songfest. Houghton County Historical
Society Heritage Center on Calumet Street in Lake Linden. Tickets are only
$5 at the door. Performers include organist Virginia Baker, violinist Jessica
Dakota, reader John Garber, the Amazing Grace Praise Band, the barbershop
quartet the Copper Country Chords and Studio North Opera. Also attend the free
with Admission Ice Cream Social following the performance.
Tues. 7/6. 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Living History Adventures: Eagle
Harbor Lighthouse Museum: the City of Bangor. Learn the history of the grounded
steamer with Mark Rowe and creative writing about the grounding with poet Barb
Simila. The Keweenaw County Historical Society presents these yearly educational
programs for youth 7 to 12 years combining history with the arts. Each
"adventure" is on Tuesdays from 9:30 - 11:30 am. $5.00 per session.

2004: Copper Falls stamp sands session. Investigate the remnants of copper
mining at the Copper Falls stamp sands with geologist Bill Rose and make
imprints and impressions of this landscape with artist Kayo Miwa. This is the
second in a series of Reading the Landscape of the Keweenaw 2004, environmental
explorations of art and natural history field trips for adults. There is a $12
fee per session and registration and advanced payment are requested. Please call

Sat. 7/10. 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Paper artist Cindi Buenzli-Gertz will be
teaching Recycled Papermaking on at the Ramblin' Rose Arts Center in
Mohawk Learn the ancient art of making handmade paper using recycled items. A brief history of papermaking will be covered, as well as how to make your own paper pulp. Students will learn
to create their own sheets of handmade paper, using basic methods such as dipping,
pouring and embedding. There is no charge for this class, but pre-registration is
required (phone 337-4706). This class is sponsored by the Children's Trust Fund
and is part of Keweenaw Krayons' Art to Go program. Visit

Sat. 7/10. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and Michigan Technological University will sponsor an open house on the
Lake Guardian research vessel. Tours at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tour spaces will be on a first-come basis. The ship will be docked on the Houghton waterfront beside the Portage Lift Bridge.

Keweenaw mining family circa 1910. Three generations in one household use
traditional music to tell a story of their life and times. Traditional music is
arranged and performed by Mike Irish, Director of the Jazz Program at Michigan
Tech, and his band. The story is written by John Griebel, who also directs the

Central Mine. Tour two homes built during the copper boom of 1854 to learn
Central's history and holiday legend; make a Victorian copper
"punched" ornament. The Keweenaw County Historical Society presents

Tues. 7/20. 7:30 p.m. Studio North Opera will present an opera scenes concert, “Diva
Moments,”at St. Peter’s-by-the-Sea Church, Eagle Harbor. The program includes an extended scene from the second act of Verdi’s
La Traviata. Members of the ensemble include sopranos Ann Campbell, Jane Kliakhandler and Emilie
Krznarich; mezzo-soprano Mary Richards-Kallman; tenors Bill Francis and Charles
White; baritone Greg Campbell and bass Barry Pegg. Christine Seitz, artistic director for Studio North Opera, will introduce each scene and provide the audience with background information. Pianist Neil Paynter is accompanist and musical coach. The admission for the evening program is $10/general and $5 for seniors/students, payable at the door.
Wed. 7/21. 2 p.m. Studio North Opera will present a young people's
performance at Peter’s-by-the-Sea Church, Eagle Harbor. This concert is open to the public with no admission
charged; however, donations will be accepted for Keweenaw
Krayons. Kermit's Keweenaw Kids will provide some bus transportation for Keweenaw County Youth and their parents/guardians.

A special feature of this year’s art selections are lighthouse creations, which will help celebrate the 3rd Annual Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Lighthouse Tour taking place this weekend. So get out your blanket or lawn chair, come early for rolls and cookies (some which will contain thimbleberries) and stay late while enjoying the music and sweet corn, hot dogs, brats, thimbleberry sundaes and more. The festival will be moved to the American Legion Hall in case of rain.

University in Hancock, Michigan presents The Annual Sibelius Academy Music
Festival. Calumet Theatre at 340 6th Street in Calumet. World-class
student-musicians from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, travel
annually to Finlandia to give outstanding public performances. This year's
performers include Kouta Rasanen (bass baritone) who was named "Soloist of
the Year" in 2002 at the Finnish Opera Union; Terji Jaaskelainen (piano),
one of the youngest pianists ever to receive the title of "Master of
Music" at the Academy; and Anna-Liisa Bezrodny (violin) who entered the
Academy at age nine and has won numerous awards. Featured vocal and musical
selections will include Sibelius, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms

**MOHAWK -- On Friday July 23rd from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Diana Malnar, Youth Education Specialist at the
Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, and Audrey Chamberlain, a VISTA/Americorps Volunteer, are inviting teens to take part in the Peace Mural Project. Designs for a pair of murals have been sketched and await eager and talented artists. Refreshments,
food and fun will be provided at no cost to those who volunteer their time and talent for this project. Although the event is aimed at teens, mature artists are invited as well. In the event of rain, we will meet at the Ramblin' Rose or Keweenaw Krayons Art Center. Participants are asked to wear
painting clothes and bring their favorite painting music. The murals will help to raise awareness about violence prevention and
to promote peace and community. The Peace Murals will be unveiled at the Thimbleberry Jam Fest on July 24th in Mohawk.

HOUGHTON -- The Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) has available for distribution the Annie E. Casey Foundation 15th annual
KIDS COUNT Data Book at no charge for area non-profit organizations. Mary Sue Hyslop, KCF
executive director, notes, "This valuable publication provides a state-by-state statistical portrait of the educational,
health and economic conditions of American children. This year’s essay focuses on the increasing number of
'disconnected' youth without degrees or employment who face a tough transition to adulthood. Helping all youth in our community is a priority of the Keweenaw Community Foundation. We are convening funders and organizations to help youth through local

HANCOCK -- There are still spots available in Summer Arts Camp, a program of the Copper Country Community Arts Council now in its 19th year. The week long sessions
-- August 2 through 6 and August 9 through 13 -- will give children entering 3rd through 6th grades the opportunity to explore papermaking, bookbinding, printmaking, drama, instrument making, kite-making and making chess boards from nuts and bolts. Yana Weglarz, coordinator and past camper, has organized an exciting roster of activities with enthusiastic creative instructors. The fee for Summer Arts Camp is $80 per week. Students are required to register in advance and bring a sack lunch. The Copper Country Community Arts Council traditionally offers scholarship assistance. Cash donations are gladly accepted to help the Council provide children with the opportunity to participate.

MOHAWK - You might want to carve a space out of your schedule this summer to observe wild-fowl
wood-carver Stuart Baird as he creates a variety of birds. Self-taught in the art of wood carving, Baird will be the Keweenaw Krayons Saturday "Artist in Residence" in the newly opened "Agassiz Park Novelties and Art" shop, located in Calumet's Agassiz Park. Baird will be on hand each Saturday this summer from noon to 4 p.m. Keweenaw Krayons has openings for additional "Artists in Residence" both at the park and at their Mohawk Art Center. HOUGHTON -- The Keweenaw Community Foundation would like to inform interested organizations
of the disbursement grant from the Portage Community Health Endowment. This fund will be granted according to the guidelines established by the Keweenaw Community Foundation and Portage Community Health Endowment Advisory Committee. The total amount available for grant is $16,558. Grants must support health initiatives for any or all ages in our service areas of Keweenaw and Houghton Counties. Grants will be made to organizations or for programs previously demonstrating successful outcomes or to new, innovative organizations or programs with clear potential for positive outcomes. Grant
applications/RFPs are due at the Keweenaw Community Foundation (lower level, City Centre Building, 616 Shelden Avenue, Houghton) no later than August 2, 2004. Grant decisions and disbursements to be completed by September 6, 2004. HANCOCK -- The Community Arts Center will offer a summer session of Van Goghing Somewhere for youth 10 to 13 years of age. Elissa
Karstu, graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, will teach Drawing July 20 through August 5. The three-week class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4
p.m. to 5:30 pm. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing including perspective, figure drawing, and still life, with fun warm-up exercises, outdoor assignments, and group critiques. Students will also keep a sketchbook and learn drawing vocabulary. The fee for the class is $65, which includes all materials. Students must pre-register for the class. KEWEENAW PENINSULA -- The Copper Country Homecoming and Old Settler's Ball
will take place through July 3 throughout Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties and the Ojibwa Nation.You'll find food fairs, boat rides, horse rides and visits to historical points of interest throughout the area.
During the week, there will be thousands of historic photos, displays and booths of historic interest at the Dee Stadium on the waterfront in Houghton. There will also be computers stuffed with genealogical data.

HOUGHTON -- Michigan's Copper Country: History, People & Place, a two-day symposium examining the rich and varied history of
Michigan’s Copper Country, will be held July 1-2 to coincide with the Copper Country Homecoming and Old Settlers Ball. Sessions will be held on the campus of Michigan Technological University and various historic sites.
The conference intends to engage different types of historical researchers, from the local region and elsewhere, highlight their research and knowledge and encourage an interchange of ideas on the history, people and places that have shaped Michigan’s historic copper mining district.
