Sat. 4/05. Walk for Peace will start at noon from the Motherlode Coffeehouse in Houghton. "Support the soldiers: Bring them home alive without further loss of life" will be the theme of this Saturday's Walk, sponsored by the Copper Country Peace Alliance. After the Walk, an informal round-table discussion will be held at the Motherlode, starting about 1:15 p.m. The public is invited. For more information, call 284-0581.

Sat. 4/12, 11 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Trinity Irish Dance Company will be offering a free Beginners' Irish Dance Class in Room 210 of MTU's Walker Arts and Humanities Center. More experienced dancers are also welcome. No experience is necessary for the beginners' class (recommended for ages 10 and up), which should give participants a good understanding of the basics of Irish step dancing and an appreciation for the amazing skill and dedication it takes to become a dancer. Wed. 4/16. Silent auction of mining and geological artifacts. MTU Campus. Memorial Union. The auction is part of the UP Section of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration's (SME) annual conference. Secret bids can be placed throughout the day on donated mining, mineral and surveying memorabilia. Winners will be announced at SME's evening banquet; you need not be present to win. The proceeds help to support the MINE (Mineral Industry Education) scholarship program. ME is accepting donations of items to auction. In addition, the conference includes presentations on geology, mining and mineral processing. Thurs. 4/17, 3 p.m. Michigan Tech's Fine Arts Department will host a demonstration of glassblowing by Michigan Tech senior Aaron Meyette on in McArdle Theatre (Walker Arts and Humanities Center). The event is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in seeing how art glass is created by the lampworking technique is welcome to attend any part of the event on a drop-in basis. More information on the demonstration is available from the Fine Arts Department, 487-2067.

Thurs. 4/17, 6 p.m. Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club treats state champion Calumet High School hockey team to dinner. The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club will hold its regular monthly dinner meeting at 6 pm, Thursday, April 17, at the CLK Senior Citizen Center, 318 Hecla Street, Laurium. A baked chicken and Baroni's spaghetti dinner will be served. Guests of honor are the Michigan state champion Calumet High School hockey team and coaches. A video presentation of the championship game will be shown. Come out and show your pride and support for these talented young athletes. Tues. 4/22, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. CDT. Congressman Stupak will be at Gogebic Community College. Student Lounge of the Lindquist Student Center.

Tues. 4/22, morning. Congressman Stupak will visit with an American history class at  Luther Wright High School, and from noon - 1 p.m. EDT. Stupak will have lunch with seniors at the Gogebic-Ontonagon Senior Center

Tues. 4/22, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Town hall meeting with Congressman Stupak. Multi-purpose room at Calumet Public School, 57070 Mine St.

Wed. 4/23, morning. Congressman Stupak will talk with students in American government classes at Northern Michigan University.

Wed. 4/23, 11:15 a.m. Congressman Stupak will present  a $575,000 ceremonial  check to the Mayor of Negaunee in the Negaunee City Council Chambers at 100 Silver Street. The check represents the second installment of federal funds for the phased construction of the city's wastewater treatment  system. In 2001 Congress approved $3.125 million for the first phase of the project.

Wed. 4/23, noon - 1 p.m. Congressman Stupak will join seniors at the Negaunee Senior Citizens Center, 410 Jackson St., Negaunee for lunch.

Wed. 4/23, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The town hall meeting with Congressman Stupak will be at the Ishpeming Senior Center, 300 S. Pine St., Ishpeming.

Wed. 4/23, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. MTU Earth Week:  SEEn, the Society for Environmental Engineering, will show Chinatown, a film with a water conservation theme, in the Minerals & Materials Building, room U115 (free popcorn and pop provided). Following the film, Ph.D. Candidate Fred Young will lead a discussion about the implications of water conservation in our region.

Thurs. 4/24, morning. Congressman Stupak will chat with students in the American government class at Gwinn High School.

Thurs. 4/24, 1 p.m. ­ 2 p.m. MTU Earth Week: Dr. Dana Richter, MTU researcher, will introduce Thursday's theme of voluntary simplicity in a presentation on organic farming and composting, as well as how to save seeds. Richter's discussion will be in the Blue Room of the ROTC Building. (The Blue Room is located on the east of the first floor).

Thurs. 4/24, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Stephanie Mills, environmental writer, MTU Earth Week's featured speaker, will discuss "How Are We to Live? -- the pleasures and purposes of living simply" in room G002 of the U.J. Noblet Forestry Building, adjacent to the atrium. The public will have an opportunity to participate in a question and answer session following her presentation. A free catered dinner from the Keweenaw Co-op will complete Thursday evening's activities.

Historian Char Miller will give a talk "Gifford Pinchot and the Making of Modern Environmentalism." The chair of the History Department of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, Miller is the author of "The Greatest Good, 100 Years of Forestry in America" and editor of "Fluid Arguments: Five Centuries of Western Water Conflict" and "On the Border, An Environmental History of San Antonio." His talk is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow his presentation. Miller's visit is sponsored by the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science.

After the book signing, join Mills once more at 1 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Memorial Union Building for a presentation titled "Sauntering: Feet Feats." Snacks will be provided.

Fri. 4/25, noon to 12:20 p.m. and 12:30 to 12:50 p.m. MTU Earth Week: MS Environmental Engineering Candidate Pete Koepfgen's presents "How to Convert to Bio-Fuels & Bio-Lubricants" in Ballroom A of the Memorial Union Building. During his presentation, Koepfgen will discuss how Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park converted its maintenance vehicles to use plant oils rather than petroleum products.

Highlighting the diploma works of graduating Art and Design students, the exhibit is the largest in the history of the BFA program at Finlandia. Featured students are Kasey Koski, graphic design; Joseph VanTassel, product design; Yuka Omagari, painting; April Fountaine, Susan McCauley, Becky Weeks and Autumn Weglarz, fiber design. Sat. 4/26, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. To conclude the Earth Week celebration, five homeowners of energy-efficient homes in Houghton, Hancock and South Range invite community members to tour their homes. Maps available on the ESC website and at Earth Week functions.

Sat. 4/26, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Congressman Stupak will be one of many honoring American Legion State Commandant Jerry D. Lynch, of Daggett, at a testimonial dinner at the Hannahville Potawatomi Legion Post 166, West 399 Highways 2 and 41, in Harris. There will be a social hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner. Although the event is public, tickets are $25.

Sat. 4/26, 8 p.m. Every Good Boy Deserves Favor. University Theatre and Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. Rozsa Center, MTU. This unique play for actors and orchestra was written by playwright Tom Stoppard with music by André Previn. Set in a state-controlled mental hospital in the Soviet Union, the play is about dissent in a highly structured society. Previn's score and the orchestra are integrated into the action of the play in surprising ways. Christopher Plummer, assistant professor of theater, makes his MTU debut as stage director for the combined theater/KSO production. Long-time KSO music director Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, now a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University, returns as conductor for the two performances. Call 487-3200 for tickets.

Sun. 4/27, 7 p.m. Mercury. Ex Urban, 416 Shelden, Houghton. The Mercury program is a mostly instrumental, spacey, groove based rock band currently on tour from Gainesville, Florida. Think of groups like Tristeza, the funkier and quieter tune of 44 Songs, or local favorites. They're a four piece--guitar, drums, bass, and vibes. This will be their only Michigan show and one of only three or four in the Midwest.

Mon. 4/28, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The spring trip ends with two town hall meetings. Congressman Stupak will share information and listen to concerns of Escanaba area residents. Escanaba City Hall, 410 Ludington St.
