Tues. 10/2: Willem Beets, a leading expert on agriculture in developing countries, will discuss "Multilateral Development Agencies: Five Reasons Why They Are Increasingly Ineffective" at 4 p.m. in Room G002 of the U. J. Noblet Forestry Building at Michigan Technological University.

Wed. 10/3: Opening Reception for Elizabeth Ann Julio's ceramic sculpture exhibition entitled "Survival," 6 p.m.-7:30 pm. at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 601 Quincy St., Hancock.

Wed. 10/3: Copper Country Peace Alliance meets at 7 p.m. upstairs in the Community Arts Center in Hancock.

Wed. 10/3: Van Evera Distinguished Lecture: former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt on "Environmental Challenges: America in the 21st Century," 8 p.m., Rozsa Center.

Thurs. 10/4: Willem Beets will discuss "The Role of Trees in Raising the Sustainability of Smallholder Farming Systems in the Tropics" at  noon in Room G002 of the U. J. Noblet Forestry Building at Michigan Tech.

Fri. 10/5: Grant Township Land Use Planning Committee meets with Grant Township Board members, 7 p.m., Copper Harbor Community Building.

Fri. 10/5: The Missoula Children's Theatre, and young actors of the Keweenaw, present "Red Riding Hood," in the Historic Calumet Theatre. Performance Friday at 7 p.m. For tickets, phone 337-2610.

Sat. 10/6: North Woods Conservancy meeting at 2 p.m. at the Allouez Township Community Center (behind the Allouez Amoco between Calumet and Mohawk on U.S. 41). All NWC members are encouraged to attend; the public is also welcome. Topics to be discussed/presented include: Mouth of the Gratiot/NAWCA grant, Seven Mile Point, Michigan Coastal Cleanup, land use, lawsuit summary, conservation and agricultural easements.

Thurs. 10/11: "Can We Talk?" Workshop for parents of 9 to 14 year olds. Discussion and activities on self-esteem, puberty and sexuality, and media influences on children. Also: "How to talk to your kids about sex." The Workshop is from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at Portage Lake United Church. It is free but pre-registration required by Oct. 9. Call 482-0790.

Fri. 10/12: Party & Reception, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. for Jack Oyler and Harriet Mayer's artwork, at the Omphale Gallery, 431 5th St., Calumet. Gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.

Fri. 10/12: The Copper Country Ethnic Dancers meet every Friday at 8 p.m. for international folk dancing in the (Hancock) Community Arts Center's upstairs performance hall. No partner or previous experience necessary.

Sat. 10/13: Northland Consortium, regional meeting hosted by the Friends of Fashion and the Chassell Historical Organization. For more information, call John Van Westenburg at 523-6137.

Sat. 10/13: Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District’s 50th Annual Meeting at the Finnish-American Heritage Center on the campus of Finlandia University, Quincy Street in Hancock. A social hour including musical entertainment (Mountain Echo Bluegrass Band) and refreshments will run from 5 p.m. -- 6:00 p.m. Buffet Dinner is at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. the District will conduct a brief business meeting with a year-end report from the district and its staff, followed by the director’s election and a guest speaker (to be announced). Board of Director Election Results and Door Prizes will close out the evening. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the District Office at (906) 482-0214. Tickets are $12.00 per person.

Sat. 10/13: Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, with the Jack Reilly Trio, including the world premiere of Jack Reilly's concerto entitled "Orbitals," 8 p.m., Rozsa Center.

Sun. 10/14: Global Peace March and World Cultural Awareness Rally in Marquette, sponsored by Northern Michigan University Greens. Meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Barry Events Center parking lot for a Peace March up Third and Washington Streets. The march will end at Harlow Park where several NMU professors and others from the community will speak on Arab/American relations, Islam and other current issues. Thurs. 10/18: October 18 is the deadline for entries for the 25th Annual Copper Country Community Arts Council's Poor Artists' Sale, scheduled this year for December 1, in the Calumet High School Gymnasium. Entry forms and more information are available at the Community Arts Center, 126 Quincy St., Hancock, or call 482-2333.

Fri. 10/19: Club Indigo film Mediterraneo, 7:15 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre. Greek and Italian buffet at 6 p.m. by Chef Bill of the Keweenaw Co-op. Sat. 10/20: Cross country skiers and their families are invited to help with brushing at Swedetown Trails in Calumet. Meet at the Swedetown chalet at 9 a.m. More information.

Sat. 10/20: Choice Rocks concert in support of PPexpress, 7 p.m. to midnight at Community Arts Center in Hancock. Bands include Fat Cow, Erik Koskinen, Carp, Finn Street, Old Victoria, Sah, Numbskulls, and Buse. $1.00 cover (to cover costs), free refreshments. Open to ages 17 up, but under 17 can attend with a guardian.

Tues. 10/23: Visitors from Guatemala along with Copper Country residents who have served as human rights observers will offer a slide presentation and discussion regarding the changing cultural, political and economic climate of Guatemala, 4 - 6 p.m., Michigan Tech Alumni Lounge.

Wed. 10/24: Copper Country Habitat for Humanity premiers its video "Dollars and Sense: Building Energy Efficient Housing,"  7 p.m., Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, 527 Hancock Avenue in Hancock. Cider and baked goods will be provided.

Mon. 10/29: Keweenaw Krayons, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Ramblin' Rose Arts Center, Mohawk -- Teen Mentors meet and plan the week's activities; do homework; chat; work on an art project and eat pizza!!! Anyone interested in finding out more about being a teen mentor can call 337-4706.

Tues. 10/30: Keweenaw Krayons, 4 p.m. to ??? -- Taking down of the summer greenhouse to make way for the year round one. Funded by Keweenaw Community Foundation and happening with the help of many volunteers!!! Adults needed to help with this big project -- both the taking down and the putting up!!!

Tues. 10/30: Keweenaw Krayons, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. -- 4-H Fun Zone with Suzanne Hoppe.
