About Our Authors
Lynn Torkelson is the CFO and technical director of SoftMedia Artisans, Inc.,
a company he founded in Atlanta in 1997 with his wife, Constance
Petersen. His
great-grandparents met and married in Pequaming, and Lynn grew up on the shores
of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. In January of 1999 he returned with his
family and his company to the Lake Superior area he loves.
Having worked in the software industry since graduating from college, Lynn
got in on the ground floor of personal computing in 1978. This allowed him to
remain an active programmer even after receiving several promotions in corporate
management. After leaving the corporate world, Lynn worked as an independent
software developer before the founding of SoftMedia Artisans, Inc. He is lead
author of the book Programming
the Web with Visual Basic .NET,
Apress, July 2002, ISBN 1590590279.
Using the handle "Birch Bark", Lynn gently moderates the KeweenawNow
Discussion boards.

on the Smartisans.com Web site.

TORCH
LAKE TOWNSHIP -- Guest columnist Lynn Torkelson describes how PastyNET's new wireless Internet service, recently installed through an inconspicuous antenna on the Quincy Mine Hoist, reaches the computers for his company, SoftMedia Artisans, Inc., located on Portage Lake, south of Dollar Bay. A single wireless transceiver serves all the computers on his local network with a connection that is 8 to 10 times faster and eliminates the expense of separate phone lines to each computer.
