About Our Authors
Guest writer Paul Freshwater is a resident of Eagle Harbor, Mich., and Avila Beach, Calif. As a board member of both Keweenaw County and Houghton County historical societies, Paul has continued to be involved in historical preservation efforts in the local area as well as other civic activities since his 1997 retirement from Procter & Gamble as Regional Manager of State and Local Government Relations.
Paul is a principal sponsor of the Calumet Theatre and co-founder of the Houghton County Historical Preservation Endowment. He is a convening member of the Eagle Harbor Township Land Use Planning Steering Committee and often attends local government board meetings.
Originally from Ohio, Paul holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science from MIT Sloan School of Management. His past professional positions include past chairman of Associate members Group of Southern States Energy Board in Atlanta, Ga.; co-founder and past vice-chairman of the Southern States Waste Management Coalition in Atlanta; co-founder of Ohio Issues Scanning Network in Akron; past treasurer of Ohio Alliance for the Environment in Columbus; and past treasurer of The Film House, Inc., in Cincinnati.
After college, Paul served as a Lieutenant, Civil Engineer Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve (active duty 1964-66).
A list of past civic activities is evidence that Paul Freshwater is no stranger to active community involvement. From his memberships on community, neighborhood support and housing boards to his participation in the Boy Scouts of America, Paul has demonstrated a talent for leadership. His many awards include the Silver Beaver Award and William H. Spurgeon III Award from the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Procter & Gamble Environmental Technology Council Award and the Kennedy Heights Citizen of the Year.
Paul holds current affiliations with the Miscowaubik Club of Calumet, Keweenaw Kernewek, the Ohio Society of Colonial Wars, the Literary Club of Cincinnati and the Buick Club of America.
Like Paul, his wife, Robertine (Bobbie) Freshwater, grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Bobbie's ancestors came to Eagle Harbor in the 1840s, and
she spent her childhood summers in Eagle Harbor.

(KCHS) met for dinner at the Allouez Community Hall on October 7 to celebrate a
year of accomplishments, present an annual award and hear speaker Keweenaw
National Historical Park Superintendent Frank Fiala outline his vision for the
