John Griffith, president and co-founder with his wife, Jane Griffith, of the North Woods Conservancy, lives in Calumet and Allouez Township with Jane and children Kate (11) and Evan (9). He is a member of the Allouez Township Land Use Planning Committee.

The Griffiths, conservation biologists, were instrumental in adding the Gratiot River project into the second phase of a regional North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant application. Since 1986, the Griffiths have operated Griffith Wildlife Biology, an endangered species research and management firm specializing in marine science and southwestern riparian and sage systems.

John and Jane Griffith volunteer with several local organizations helping to preserve cultural, historical, and natural resources in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Property owners agree to expand public ownership of Gratiot River area

KEWEENAW COUNTY -- Last night at the Keweenaw County Board meeting, Glen Tolksdorf and John Griffith issued a joint statement regarding an agreement that allows the sale of the Mouth of the Gratiot River as originally negotiated between Keweenaw County and Lake Superior Land Company to proceed. more

KEWEENAW COUNTY -- For more than a year, Keweenaw County has been negotiating the purchase of the mouth of the Gratiot River from Lake Superior Land Company for a county park to be used for hunting, fishing, agate picking and primitive camping for kayakers. In the paperwork drafted on Sept 21, an easement is listed as part of the deal. The easement, benefiting the owners of Section 12 (NE of the park), bisects the park and includes a bridge across the mouth of the Gratiot River. more
